Level Up Learning: Practical Gamification in Training

Unlock the power of gamification to boost engagement, motivation and learning outcomes. Transform your teaching and training with playful, purposeful and practical strategies.

Activity Type: Physical Mobility

Duration: 1-week course for professionals from all Erasmus+ eligible countries and all educational levels.

Using Game Principles to Create Meaningful Learning Experiences

Engagement and motivation are important drivers of successful learning. This course introduces educators and trainers to gamification: the purposeful application of game elements and mechanics in non-game learning environments.

Participants will explore both the reasons gamification works and the practical steps required to use it effectively. They will examine how goals, challenges, feedback, progression, cooperation, rewards, narratives and learner choice can enrich lessons, workshops and training programmes.

The course goes beyond simply making learning fun. Participants will learn how gamification can structure progress, support autonomy, maintain participation and encourage meaningful behaviour change without relying excessively on competition or external rewards.

Through interactive workshops, learner analysis and rapid prototyping, participants will design gamified activities for their own educational settings. They will consider learner motivations, accessibility, inclusion and the balance between challenge and ability.

By the end of the week, participants will have developed a practical, context-specific gamification plan ready to test and implement with their learners.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • explain the essential concepts of gamification and their connection with motivation and learning
  • distinguish gamification from game-based learning and entertainment
  • identify appropriate game elements for different learning objectives
  • use challenges, feedback, progression, rewards and narratives purposefully
  • analyse learner needs, motivations and potential barriers to participation
  • apply a learner-centred design process to gamified activities
  • create motivational feedback loops and visible progression systems
  • adapt gamification for diverse learners and accessible learning environments
  • assess learning within a gamified educational experience
  • produce a practical gamification plan for their own teaching or training context
